Welcome to this month’s podcast and radio programme in Spanish with Marcelo Justo and Marta Nunez, downloaded and broadcast on radio networks across Latin America and Spain. ¡Bienvenidos y bienvenidas a nuestro podcast y programa radiofonica! (abajo en castellano). This month:
In this programme we analyse the state of tax collection in Latin America. Things are improving, but evasion is still a huge problem and a low social spend. But, there are some steps forward: 1,200 businesses exposed by the Panama Papers are being investigated in Colombia (although tax evasion still isn’t a crime there), 22 cities in Spain have declared themselves tax haven-free zones: no public contracts for companies which use tax havens.
Also: we take a look at the latest Panama Papers and Bahamas Leaks developments; we shine a light on the darkness of the church and its connections to money laundering in Guatemala; and we bring you the next episode of the history of tax havens and how the United States came onto the tax haven scene. Finally, it’s not all bad news! We bring you the latest positive developments in the struggle against tax havens.
Guests include: Ricardo Martner, head of Unidad de Asuntos Fiscales of the United Nations, CEPAL. Mario Alejandro Valencia of the Tax Justice Network in Colombia. Alejandra Gutiérrez Valdizan from the newspaper Plaza Publica, which investigated the Panama Papers in Guatemala, Abelardo Medina, director of the Instituto Centro Americano de Estudios Fiscales and Nicholas Shaxson, author of Treasure Islands.
