Bahamas: Submission to the UN Independent Expert on the effects of foreign debt and human rights in support of the country visit to the Bahamas

This report, submitted to aid the Independent Expert's visit on the effects of foreign debt in the Bahamas, highlights the detrimental impact of the country's tax haven status, pointing to regressive tax policies and financial secrecy practices that fuel global inequalities and jeopardise human rights in other jurisdictions.

This report was submitted in support of the Independent Expert on the effects of foreign debt’s upcoming visit to the Bahamas. As an internationally recognised tax haven, the Bahamas has pursued a tax and financial secrecy legal and policy framework that increases the risks of tax abuse and illicit financial flows, negatively impacting on other countries’ abilities to collect tax revenues, and therefore also on the human rights and wellbeing of people in other jurisdictions, further compounding inequalities. The document details financial secrecy practices and regressive tax policies that undermine human rights in the Bahamas and their effects on other States as well.
