Welcome to the ninth edition of our new monthly Arabic podcast/radio show Taxes Simply الجباية ببساطة contributing to tax justice public debate around the world. (In Arabic below) Taxes Simply الجباية ببساطة is produced and presented by Walid Ben Rhouma and Osama Diab of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, also an investigative journalist. The programme is available for listeners to download and it’s also available for free to any radio stations who would like to broadcast it. In the ninth issue of الجباية ببساطة (Taxes Simply) we start with a summary of September’s tax news from around the Arab region and the world, including:

• Turkey tries to contain the lira crisis by raising the interest rate
• A World Bank arbitration centre fines Egypt $2 billion in gas supply case
• The Israeli Minister of Finance threatens to withhold Palestinian taxes
• Tunisia is under pressure to make reforms in order to access the fifth installment of an IMF loan

In the second part of the programme, Walid Ben Rhouma interviews Nidhal Ben Cheikh, researcher in economic and social affairs at the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development, on the attempts of successive governments to abolish the subsidy regime in Tunisia which helps the poorest buy food and fuel, an IMF requirement.

الجبایة ببساطة #9 – المصير الغامض لمنظومة الدعم في تونس

في العدد التاسع من ”الجبایة ببساطة“ نبدأ كعادتنا بملخص لأهم أخبار الضرائب والاقتصاد في شهر سبتمبر/أيلول من المنطقة العربیة والعالم، وتشمل أخبارنا المتفرقة: أ) رفع تركيا لسعر الفائدة لاحتواء أزمة الليرة ب) تغريم الحكومة المصرية ملياري دولار في قضية توريد الغاز أمام مركز تحكيم تابع للبنك الدولي ج) تهديد وزير المالية الإسرائيلي بعدم تحويل ضرائب لفلسطين د) ممارسة الضغوطات على تونس  بشأن القسط الخامس من قرض صندوق النقد. أما في القسم الثاني من البرنامج يجري وليد بن رحومة حوار مطول مع نضال بالشيخ  الباحث في الشؤون الاقتصادية والاجتماعية حول محاولات الحكومات المتعاقبة تغيير وإلغاء منظومة الدعم في تونس من خلال توجيه نفقات دعم المواد الأساسية نحو مستحقيها من الفئات ضعيفة الدخل، لكن دون جدوى رغم ضغوطات صندوق النقد الدولي.
